I first saw this American inspired cake here. This girl is a fabulous, inventive baker and she made it for the 4th of July. I am sure when most people saw this cake they were singing “God Bless America!” and somehow all I could think of was Captain America. I tucked this recipe away knowing that when my husband’s birthday came around that it would be the perfect showcase cake. However, I made it with cake mixes, because that’s just me!
Here is what you need:
- 2 boxes of white cake mix
- eggs
- oil
- 2-3 white icing- I used cream cheese, and A LOT! So I used almost 3. Yum!
Here is how you make it:
Mix cake mixes per direction on the back of the box. With the first cake mix, color the batter red, split into two cake pans and bake. Mix the second mix and split in half. Color half the batter blue and leave the other half white. Cook per directions.
After letting them cool, cut one of the red cake in half. Then cut the white layer in half. These are your main cake layers. Set them, we will get back to them in a minute. Next, take the blue cake. And cut it so it looks like an “O”. Just cut out a small circle in the middle. Then, with the other red cake, cut a little circle that will fit into the blue “0”. Whew! That may be a bit confusing, but its not really hard! Promise!
Now you can layer, red, white, red, white, blue “0” with red small circle. Be sure to frost in between layers and then ice the outside. Fill your icing piping bags with blue and red and you can easily make the top of the cake look like Captain America’s shield.
